Boat Insurance Coverages
What does a Progressive boat insurance policy cover?
At Progressive, boat insurance is more than just protection for your watercraft. In addition to safeguarding your boat on and off the water, our boat policies can be personalized to cover carry-on items, mechanical breakdowns, haul-outs, fuel spills, injuries to you and your passengers, and more.
Standard boat insurance coverages
Full replacement cost
If you carry boat comprehensive and collision coverage, we may pay what it costs to return your watercraft to its pre-accident condition or better. For instance, if your boat's Bimini top, valued at $300, is damaged in an accident and it costs $1,500 to replace (and it can’t be repaired), we cover that amount.
Bodily injury & property damage liability (BI/PD)
Bodily injury liability covers you if you're in a boat accident and liable for injuring others. Boat property damage liability coverage also may pay to repair or replace any watercraft, object or other property you damage while boating, plus legal expenses if you’re sued.
Fuel spill
Progressive pays for fuel spills, up to your policy’s limits, no matter how the spill happened: sunken boat, leaking tank, or a mishap at the fueling station.
Wreckage removal
If your boat sinks, we can cover the cost of removing your boat from the water (if removal is legally required).
Roadside assistance
This boat coverage comes standard if you have trailer coverage on your policy—we’ll pay to tow your disabled vehicle and/or trailer to the nearest repair shop. See how boat roadside assistance works.
Water sports coverage
Water sports coverage pays for any injuries to your guests from tubing, knee boarding, wake boarding, wake surfing or other similar activities, up to your coverage limit. Parasailing, kite boarding or other activities in which someone is pulled through the air aren't covered.
Pro tip:
While only three states (Arkansas, Utah, and Hawaii) have laws that require boat insurance, many marinas mandate a boat insurance policy before you can dock your boat for an extended period.
Additional boat insurance coverage options
Total loss replacement
This boat coverage is available for purchase if you’re the original owner of your boat and it's no more than one model year old. If your boat is totaled within 5 model years, we can pay for a new one or pay you the amount that you originally paid for your totaled boat—your choice. If you're outside the 5 model-year window, we’ll still pay you the original purchase price of your boat.
Sign & Glide® on-water towing
If your boat is disabled or breaks down on the water, Sign & Glide pays for on-water towing, jump starts, soft un-groundings, and fuel delivery if your boat is disabled on the water. Just call our dispatch center, and we’ll arrange for and pay the tow operator directly. You pay nothing out of pocket for boat towing service.
Fishing equipment or carry-on items
For lost or stolen items, you can get replacement cost, meaning no depreciation is taken, for up to $10,000 on fishing equipment, such as your tackle box or fishing pole. You may also receive replacement cost value, up to $10,000, for personal effects such as scuba gear, phones, or other items that you carry on board.
Propulsion Plus® mechanical breakdown coverage
We can pay to repair or replace the lower unit of an outboard motor, or upper & lower units of an inboard/outboard motor if you have a mechanical breakdown—even if it’s caused by general wear and tear. Starts at $38/year. Propulsion Plus doesn’t apply to jet drives or inboard motors.
Comprehensive
Comprehensive protects your watercraft against events out of your control, including theft, vandalism, fire, and weather-related issues, minus your deductible.
Collision
Collision covers damage from boating accidents, such as hitting a submerged object, dock, or another boat, minus your deductible. Collision can also cover vet bills if your pet is injured in a boat accident.
Uninsured/underinsured boater (UB/UIB)
If you're hit by a boater with no insurance or not enough coverage, UB/UIB can pay for your injuries and damages up to your policy’s limits.
Medical payments
You can pick a range of coverage limits to pay for you and your passengers’ medical bills if you're in an accident or someone is hurt on your boat. Medical payments coverage has no deductible.
Trailer trip interruption
Pays your expenses if you break down at least 100 miles from home. We may reimburse you up to $500 to cover food, hotel, and other transportation costs. Costs only $10/year.
Hurricane haul out
If the National Weather Service issues a tropical storm or hurricane watch or warning for the county in which your boat is located, this boat coverage can pay 50% (up to $2,000) of the cost for having a professional haul out your watercraft or move it to a safe harbor.
