What are the minimum requirements for motorcycle insurance in Montana?

Montana motorcycle insurance laws require all riders to carry motorcycle liability coverage for bodily injury and property damage. Liability coverage won’t cover damage to your bike but may pay for injuries and damages you cause to others while riding, up to your policy's limits. You can increase the amount of liability coverage, if necessary, in order to more fully protect your assets.

Required coverageWhat it coversMinimum amount
Bodily injury liabilityWhat it coversInjuries you cause to others in an accidentMinimum amount$25,000 per person
$50,000 per accident
Bodily injury property damageWhat it coversProperty damage you cause to others in an accidentMinimum amount$20,000 per accident

Montana also mandates uninsured motorist bodily injury coverage, but you may reject or lower this coverage by submitting a signed form if you choose not to carry it. Underinsured motorist bodily injury coverage is optional in Montana, and can pay your remaining medical expenses if the other driver's policy limit doesn't cover the total amount.

Do you need comprehensive and collision coverage?

Unless you're financing or leasing your bike, comprehensive motorcycle coverage and collision motorcycle coverage are both optional. But even if your bike is paid in full, you may want to protect your investment against physical damage. Comprehensive may cover damage to your bike from events out of your control: motorcycle theft, vandalism, hitting an animal, fire, and weather-related issues. Collision can cover your motorcycle if it collides with another object or vehicle, regardless of who's at fault.
