What's the risk of getting cheap car insurance?

Two common ways to lower your rate — dropping optional coverages and raising your deductible — can expose you to more risk. For example, if you have a liability limit that equals less than your net worth, your assets could be at risk if you're found liable in an accident.

To determine how much car insurance you should have, make sure your liability limits could cover your net worth in a worst-case scenario. And before you raise your comprehensive or collision deductible, build up your rainy-day fund to comfortably cover your deductible.

Doing this research upfront can help ensure you're getting cheap car insurance that still provides the protection you need.

Thankfully, there are plenty of safe ways to get cheaper car insurance, like qualifying for discounts. Progressive car insurance customers qualify for an average of seven discounts, which means your savings could stack up without ever decreasing your coverage.

    Which coverages do I need?

Every state has its own car insurance requirements that determine the minimum coverage you'll need. From there, you can increase your limits and add optional coverages so you're more fully protected. Consider the following common auto insurance coverages:

    • Liability is required in most states and covers costs you're responsible for after an accident you caused.
    • UM/UIM is required in some states and protects your wallet if you're in an accident with an uninsured or underinsured driver who can't afford to pay for your resulting injuries or damaged property.
    • PIP or medical payments coverages, while only required in some states, are common and pay for your own medical costs following an accident, regardless of fault.
    • Comprehensive is optional and protects your vehicle from events out of your control like theft, natural disasters, and more.
    • Collision is optional and pays to repair or replace your damaged vehicle if you collide with another object or vehicle.

"Full coverage" car insurance isn't technically a type of policy, but it's often used to refer to your state's required coverages plus comprehensive and collision. If you have a newer vehicle, consider getting comprehensive and collision to protect your wallet from expensive accidents or events out of your control.

Which factors can lower your car insurance rate?

Your car insurance rate is based largely on factors unique to you and your vehicle, like your age, your location, your driving history, your car's make and model and age, and how you use the vehicle. These tips can help improve your car insurance rate factors:

    • Avoid tickets and accidents: Any ticket or claim has the potential to increase your car insurance rate.
    • Drive a safe car: A younger car with good safety ratings may qualify you for a better rate for comprehensive and collision coverage, as safer cars can be less likely to be involved in insurance claims.
    • Pay attention to your location: Where you park your car and drive it is an important factor for determining how likely you are to file a claim or get in an accident. Living in less-populated areas and places less likely to experience car theft and car vandalism may result in lower rates.
